Animal Movement Trail
Turn the hallway into a trail of animal moves: hop like a frog, stomp like an elephant, tiptoe like a mouse.
Ages 3–4 years · Theme: Animals on the move

- Time
- About 10 minutes · 5 min preparation
- Parent involvement
- Play together the whole time
- Mess level
- No mess · Active energy
- Where
- Indoors or outdoors
What you need
- 4–6 sheets of paper
- A pencil or crayon
- Sticky tape (optional)
Don't have it? Swap it:
- Can't draw? Write the animal's first letter, or place a toy animal at each station instead.
How to play
Draw a quick animal on each sheet: frog, elephant, mouse, crab, bird, snake. Stick figures are perfect.
Lay the sheets in a trail along the floor with a big step between each one.
Show your child how to travel to each sheet moving like that animal.
Walk the trail together two or three times, then let your child re-order the sheets.
Cool down by floating like a feather back to the start.
Things to ask while you play
- “Which animal move made your legs work hardest?”
- “What sound does this animal make?”
- “Can you invent a brand-new animal move for the last square?”
Make it easier or harder
Easier
Use just two animals and keep the trail short and straight.
Harder
Add a memory rule: complete the whole trail from memory after the sheets are turned face down.
Skills practised
Gross motor skills · Balance · Body awareness · Memory
Safety note
Clear the trail of anything slippery or sharp-cornered, and keep socks-on-hard-floor hopping to carpeted areas. An adult should always supervise this activity.
